What is the deadline for registering to vote?

In Illinois, voter registration is always open. You can register to vote anytime, up to and including Election Day.


Am I eligible to register to vote?

To register to vote in the March 17, 2020 primary election, you must meet all of the following qualifications:

  • Be a U.S. citizen

  • Be born on or before March 17, 2002

  • Live in your precinct at least 30 days before the election

  • Not claim the right to vote elsewhere

  • Not currently be in prison/jail serving time for a conviction. Ex-convicts who have been released from prison/jail - including those currently on parole/probation - and who meet all other requirements listed above are eligible to register and vote in Illinois.


What kind of identification do I need?

You will need any TWO of the below forms of identification, ONE of which lists your current address. You may use an IL state ID and/or IL driver's license to register at your new address, even if the ID lists your old address.

  • Driver's License or State ID card

  • Passport or Military ID

  • College/University/School/Work ID

  • Vehicle registration card

  • Lease, mortgage or deed to home

  • Credit or debit card

  • Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid card

  • Insurance card

  • Civic, union or professional membership card

  • LINK/Public Aid/Department of Human Services card

  • Illinois FOID card

You may also use the the following kinds of mail as a form of ID:

  • Bill, Transcript or Report Card from School

  • Bank Statement, Pay Stub or Pension Statement

  • Utility, Medical or Insurance Bill

  • Official mail from any government agency

Use your IL driver's license or state ID card to register to vote or update your registration online.

Deadline: Sunday, March 1, 2020 at 11:59PM


Bring 2 forms of ID to ANY early voting site in Chicago March 2-March 16, 2020 to register and vote same-day. You may register and vote at the Loop SuperSite as early as February 19, 2020.

You may register or update your registration and vote same day on Election Day - just make sure to bring 2 forms of accepted ID.
